Q:I wonder, on most of your art your Foxes have white paint and a speck of red near the eyes, what exactly is it? Is there a reason for it, if yes why? Apologies however I am intrigued by the folkloric fox, and finding this specific information is a tad tough. Or is it more related on the Geisha subject?
The way I interpret foxes from Japanese folklore was inspired by Noh masks and traditional kitsune masks. Many of my favorite Noh masks are pure white with black and red accents. The contrast is rather striking, especially when paired with dark tones in a painting.
In some of my later paintings, I began adding red around the eyes and brow. This was inspired by imagery of geisha and court women from the Heian period, along with kabuki style makeup.
Up to this point I haven’t found much of a basis for their mask-like appearance in folklore, though traditional fox masks and some statues bear a similar resemblance and pallet. Their mask-like face is more of a representation of their mysterious and dualistic nature.
Q:Hi :) Can I ask what kind of paper do you use? I use regular watercolor paper, but my paper always gets wrinkles when I prep it with tea or other liquids. Love all your artwork! xx
Hello! I use medium-weight Strathmore illustration board for all my tea staining. :)
Q:Do you use references as you work? I've been trying to use them more often and my art just ends up looking kind of stiff. Your characters look very natural and free, so I was just curious if you use them at all.
Yes, I do use references most of the time while I work, especially for things like props and various types of kimono. I also understand what you are talking about - using a reference but the art / figure looks stiff in the end. I find this happens to me when I rely on a reference too heavily. :)
Q:Hi, do you warn on tumblr when you are accepting comissions? Because I have no FB or Twitter, I just have tumblr and I hope one day to be able to ask to have a comission made by you, not so different from some art I see here. I also plan on buying soon something from your Etsy store because I love the kitsune themed art but I wanted something deer-like, like some sketchs I see here but never to sell. You are one of my favorite artists, I love everything you create. <3
Yes, I do make announcements on tumblr when I am ready to begin accepting commission work! Typically the first announcement is about when I’ll open, what I’ll be accepting, and a link to my Terms of Service so there are no surprises. :)
Thank you for your interest, and kind words! Best Wishes ~
